The teams for official international competition, that is, one country versus another, range from between 4 to 8 men and women playing both singles and doubles, much like tennis' Davis Cup.

Some international tournaments are entered individually and are open to all comers. At these events, such as the Irish Nationals, Team England will enter the Elite grade but encourage the wider handball community to experience the buzz of international competition by travelling and entering into lower grades.
